Skin Care

We think it’s a treat for our body when we exfoliate, moisturize and polish, but are we actually making ourselves sick? A recent study by Bionsen, a natural deodorant company, estimates that the average woman wears 515 chemicals a day — from eye shadow ingredients linked to cancer to perfume ingredients linked to kidney damage.

In September, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration found extremely high levels of lead in lipstick. In addition, recent research from the Washington, D.C.-based Environmental Working Group (EWG) showed that teenage girls are exposing themselves to potentially hormone-altering substances by engaging in that seemingly-innocent coming-of-age tradition of applying makeup. Yet, despite the dangers, women need to bathe and groom — and most of us like a little extra color on our faces. So what can we do to stay healthy and still look good?

The quick answer is: Use fewer products and educate yourself. The average American uses 10 products every day, and chances are, she doesn’t know what’s in them. “It’s simple: Read the labels and be a smart shopper,” says Leann Brown of EWG. “Buy from companies that disclose their formulations.” Since producers aren’t required to make their ingredients public, many choose not to. “A company that discloses all ingredients and keeps out ingredients of concern will probably have lower risk products than cosmetics with mystery ingredients,” says Brown. These transparent products are likely to be equally effective — your hair will be just as smooth, your cheeks just as bright — but without the lurking health hazards.

When shopping, there are a few key ingredients to be avoid. However, due to lax regulation, you may find them in products marked “organic” and “all-natural,” so be on the lookout. Choose from the many nail polishes that have been reformulated to remove a common “toxic trio:” Dibutyl phthalate, a reproductive toxin;¬†toluene, which affects the nervous system and may cause headaches; and formaldehyde, which can cause allergies and irritation. Stay away from sodium lauryl and laureth sulfate, which are popular in cleaning products, such as body washes, as they can cause skin irritation.

Triclosan and triclocarban, which pop up in antibacterial hand soap, can damage both the thyroid and the environment. Instead, use plain soap. If you wash for 20 seconds, you’ll be just as germ-free.

Finally, stay away from parabens, common in shampoos, lotions and shaving gels. These preservatives have been so widely and publicly exposed as toxic contaminants that it is now relatively easy to find clearly-marked parabens-free products. Brown also counsels cutting out fragrance completely, since the term “fragrance” is poorly defined and could contain any number of mysterious and unhealthy synthetic compounds.

If the ingredients sound too long to remember, the Cosmetics Database offers a free pocket-size ingredients guide, where you can also find out more about over 50,000 products. If improving your health and helping the environment isn’t enough, think about this hidden benefit: Eliminating every mascara with toxic ingredients will make choosing from the overwhelming array of drugstore brands (Thickening! Lengthening! Double-thickening and lengthening!) much quicker and easier.

1.  Avoid dairy Studies of aging skin have shown that milk and milk products are associated with more aging and wrinkles.

2.  Avoid processed meats Processed meats contain high amounts of nitrates and nitrites, which are associated with many different health problems in humans. No need to get too hung up on this, but you may not want to eat deli meat every single day if you want to stay young.

3.   No processed carbohydrates Just like sugar, processed carbohydrates are a direct cause of aging and disease. Try not to eat these things too often.

4.   Tea Afternoon tea time is one of the greatest discoveries ever made. Not only is tea full of antioxidants and other cancer-fighting compounds, a midday break can be just what the doctor ordered to sip away stress.

5.  Whiten teeth I know this isn’t something you can find at the farmers market, but when you drink as much coffee and red wine as many people do, minor and admittedly superficial, fixes like teeth whitening can go a long way. If you don’t believe me, try and remember the last time you saw a 20-year-old with yellow teeth.

6.  Wear sunglasses If you’re a happy person, your wrinkles will most likely be caused by smiling and show up predominantly around your eyes. Block out extra sun with side benefit of looking super cool by always wearing sunglasses when you go outside.

7.   Cardio cardio exercise is important for vascular health. Not to mention how awesome you feel after a good session. Cardio doesn’t need to kill you, but you should do it regularly.

8.  Strength training Building strong, toned muscles is one of the most effective ways to look younger than your years. Ask anyone who looks fabulous and they’ll swear by strength training. A little goes a long way.

9.  Last but not least! Red wine Red wine has a powerful anti-aging compound in it known as resveratrol. Though it is unlikely that the dosage of resveratrol in red wine is high enough to impact lifespan, drinking alcohol in moderation is also associated with decreased risk of heart disease and other vascular problems.

The 10 signs of intrinsic (internal) aging skin are:

  1. Fine wrinkles
  2. Thin and transparent skin
  3. Loss of underlying fat, leading to hollowed cheeks and eye sockets as well as noticeable loss of firmness on the hands and neck
  4. Bones shrink away from the skin due to bone loss, which causes sagging skin
  5. Dry skin that may itch
  6. Inability to sweat sufficiently to cool the skin
  7. Graying hair that eventually turns white
  8. Hair loss
  9. Unwanted hair
  10. Nail plate thins, the half moons disappear, and ridges develops

Aging is a normal process, and aging skin is part of it. Just as you can help maintain wellness by living an active and healthy lifestyle, there is also much you can do to keep your skin healthy and more youthful looking.

What Happens as Skin Ages?

Your skin gets thinner and dryer as you age. Collagen and elastin — the networks of fibers that make your skin firm and elastic become disconnected, leading to sagging and wrinkles. Your cells simply slow down: New skin cells don’t grow as quickly and dead cells don’t shed as quickly, resulting in dull, grayish skin. Finally, older skin is more likely to develop brown spots because pigment cells, or melanocytes, begin to grow irregularly.

Types of Aging

Research shows that there are two distinct types of aging. Aging caused by the genes we inherit is called intrinsic (internal) aging. The other type of aging is known as extrinsic (external) aging and is caused by environmental and other outside factors, such as exposure to the sun’s rays.

Intrinsic Aging

Intrinsic aging, also known as the natural aging process, is a continuous process that normally begins in our mid-20s. Within the skin, collagen production slows, and elastin, the substance that enables skin to snap back into place, has a bit less spring. Dead skin cells do not shed as quickly and turnover of new skin cells may decrease slightly. While these changes usually begin in our 20s, the signs of intrinsic aging are typically not visible for decades.

Genes control how quickly the normal aging process unfolds. Some notice those first gray hairs in their 20s; others do not see graying until their 40s. People with Werner’s syndrome, a rare inherited condition that rapidly accelerates the normal aging process, usually appear elderly in their 30s. Their hair can gray and thin considerably in their teens. Cataracts may appear in their 20s. The average life expectancy for people with Werner’s syndrome is 46 years of age.

Extrinsic Aging

A number of extrinsic, or external, factors often act together with the normal aging process to prematurely age our skin. Most premature aging is caused by sun exposure. Other external factors that prematurely age our skin are repetitive facial expressions, gravity, sleeping positions, and smoking.

The Sun. Without protection from the sun’s rays, just a few minutes of exposure each day over the years can cause noticeable changes to the skin. Freckles, age spots, spider veins on the face, rough and leathery skin, fine wrinkles that disappear when stretched, loose skin, a blotchy complexion, actinic keratoses (thick wart-like, rough, reddish patches of skin), and skin cancer can all be traced to sun exposure.

Photoaging is the term dermatologists use to describe this type of aging caused by exposure to the sun’s rays. The amount of photoaging that develops depends on: 1) a skin color and 2) their history of long-term or intense sun exposure. People with fair skin who have a history of sun exposure develop more signs of photoaging than those with dark skin. In the darkest skin, the signs of photoaging are usually limited to fine wrinkles and a mottled complexion.

person’s Photoaging occurs over a period of years. With repeated exposure to the sun, the skin loses the ability to repair itself, and the damage accumulates. Scientific studies have shown that repeated ultraviolet (UV) exposure breaks down collagen and impairs the synthesis of new collagen. The sun also attacks our elastin. Sun-weakened skin ceases to spring back much earlier than skin protected from UV rays. Skin also becomes loose, wrinkled, and leathery much earlier with unprotected exposure to sunlight.

What’s the best way to promote an even-looking tan with sunless tanning products?

Sunless tanning products can provide an even, natural-looking tan if they’re applied correctly and carefully. For best results, follow the package directions carefully.

These products can be applied at home, in the form of gels, lotions, mousses, sprays and wipes. Best results are obtained when applied to clean, dry skin. Bathing and swimming should be avoided until product is fully absorbed, which varies from one to six hours. More DHA is absorbed by the thicker skin on the hands and feet, so those areas should be skipped or cleaned immediately after application.

5 Steps to get the best results:

  1. Exfoliate first. Before using a sunless tanning product, wash your skin with a wash cloth or sponge to remove excess dead skin cells. If you typically shave your legs, do so before you apply the sunless tanning product for an even application.
  2. Use a light touch. Apply the sunless tanning product evenly and lightly. Use sparingly on dry or thickened skin, such as over your ankles, knees and elbows. If necessary, ask someone to help you apply sunless tanner to hard-to-reach spots.
  3. Save the tops of your hands for last. After you apply the product to your face and body, wash your hands with soap and water to avoid coloring your palms. Be sure to remove any product from under your fingernails. Then use a cotton ball to apply the sunless tanner to the top of each hand.
  4. Take time to dry. Wait to dress until the sunless tanner dries completely.
  5. Remember, most sunless tanning products don’t contain sunscreen. If you spend time outdoors, protect your skin with generous amounts of sunscreen.

Sunless tanning is a practical alternative to sunbathing.

  • How do sunless tanning products work.
  • What can you expect from sunless tanning products?
  • Is sunless tanning safe?

Don’t want to expose your skin to the sun’s damaging rays, but don’t want to miss out on that sun-kissed glow? Consider striking a compromise with sunless tanning products. Start by understanding how sunless tanning products work  and the importance of applying them correctly and carefully.

How do sunless tanning products work?

Sunless tanning products, also called self-tanners, can give your skin a tanned look without exposing it to harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays. Sunless tanning products are commonly sold as creams, gels, lotions and sprays you apply to your skin. Professional spray-on tanning also is available at many salons, spas and tanning businesses.

The active ingredient in most sunless tanning products is dihydroxyacetone (DHA). When applied to the skin, DHA reacts with dead cells in the outermost layer of skin to temporarily darken the skin’s appearance. The coloring doesn’t wash off, but it gradually fades as the dead skin cells slough off typically within a few days.

The most effective products available are sunless tanning or self tanning lotions and sprays that contain dihydroxyacetone (DHA) as the active ingredient. The tan is not a dye, stain or paint, but a chemical reaction between the DHA and the amino acids in the dead layer on the skin surface.

Most sunless tanning products don’t contain sunscreen. If you spend time outdoors, sunscreen remains essential.

What can you expect from sunless tanning products?

Sunless tanning products typically go on clear. It usually takes about an hour to see results. Full color typically appears within eight to 24 hours. People who have medium complexions without freckles often get the best results.

Is sunless tanning safe?

Topical sunless tanning products are generally considered safe alternatives to sunbathing, as long as they’re used as directed.

Keep in mind that spray-on tanning or mist-on tanning from a salon or spa is typically applied to all parts of your body, including your face, to ensure an even color. This creates a potential for the product to get into and around your eyes, near your nostrils or onto your lips. The risks, if any, of inhaling or ingesting DHA are unknown so close your eyes and hold your breath while the tanner is applied. You may also want to request or bring along protective devices, such as goggles or nose plugs.

Questions and  answers Are Tanning Beds Safer Than Natural Sunlight?

Question

Tanning beds: Safer than the sun?

Answer

from Lawrence E. Gibson, M.D.

Tanning beds don’t offer a safe alternative to natural sunlight. Exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation damages your skin, whether the exposure comes from tanning beds or natural sunlight. This damage increases the risk of skin cancer and premature skin aging. In fact, most tanning beds emit mainly UVA rays which may increase the risk of melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer.

If you want the golden glow of a tan without exposure to damaging UV radiation, consider using a sunless tanning product.

Avoid tanning beds, and use a broad-spectrum sunscreen whenever you’re outdoors.

What is a tanning bed?

A tanning bed or sun tanning bed is a device emitting ultraviolet radiation (typically 95% UVA and 5% UVB, +/-3%) used to produce a cosmetic tan. Regular tanning beds use several fluorescent lamps that have phosphor blends designed to emit UV in a spectrum that is somewhat similar to the sun. Smaller, home tanning beds usually have 12 to 28 100 watt lamps while systems found in salons can run from 24 to 60 lamps, each consuming 100 to 200 watts.

There are also “high pressure” tanning beds that generate primarily UVA with some UVB by using highly specialized quartz lamps, reflector systems and filters. These are much more expensive, thus less commonly used. A tanning booth is quite similar to a tanning bed, but the individual stands while tanning and the typical power output of booths is higher.

Because of the adverse effects on human health of overexposure to UV radiation, including skin cancer, cataracts, suppression of the immune system, and premature skin aging, the World Health Organization does not recommend the use of UV tanning devices for cosmetic reasons. In fact, most tanning beds emit mainly UVA rays which may increase the risk of melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer. Using a sunbed without goggles may also lead to a condition known as arc eye.

Risks?

Overexposure to ultraviolet radiation is known to cause skin cancer, make skin age and wrinkle faster, mutate DNA, and reduce the immune system. Frequent tanning bed use triples the risk of developing melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer.

4 actions to take for Babies and Sunburn to make them happier

Sunburn

Babies have sensitive skin and should not be left in the sun too long, even if they are wearing sunscreen. Infants younger than six months of age should NOT be exposed to direct sunlight. Hats and sunglasses and light, loose clothing will help protect your baby from the sun. Sunburn causes pain and may increase the risk of developing skin cancer later in life. Limit exposure between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Sunscreens may be used after six months of age. Those containing zinc oxide or titanium oxide are good choices.

First aid for sunburn. What to do when your baby shows sunburn symptoms?

  1. Apply cool compresses to the painful area. Regularly cool showers help to take down the temperature when your baby has a fever.
  2. You can give Calpol or Iboprufen for pain relief.
  3. To stop the itching use calamine lotion or aloe vera. If you put the bottle in the fridge half an hour before applying the lotion it gives an extra cooling effect. Adding some backing soda or oatmeal to baby’s bath water may give some relief. Don’t give antihistamine to babies under 6 months of age before first consulting your doctor.
  4. Give extra of fluid to your child to prevent dehydration.

Never use butter, lard, margarine, vitamin E, petroleum jelly, honey, warm water, tea bags, or sunburn anesthetic sprays on sunburned skin.

In most cases your baby’s sunburn symptoms can be easily treated with these home remedies for sunburn. But with bad sunburns it is advisable to seek medical help.

When to ring for the doctor?

  • If large areas of the infants body are burned.
  • If there are blisters and sores.
  • When baby gets a fever.
  • If your baby starts sweating, vomiting or faints.
  • If baby shows signs of dehydration.

The first signs of dehydration are cracked lips, dry mouth and tongue and no wet diaper for 6 hours or more. Other signs are sunken eyes, no tears and a sunken fontanel (soft spot on baby’s scalp).

Baby Skin Care Basics

7 tips to make bath time better for everyone:

  1. NEVER leave an infant alone near a tub or water, not even for a minute!
  2. Make sure you have all supplies ready before you begin the bath towel, mild shampoo or soap, cotton balls or wash cloth to clean face.
  3. Make sure the room is warm enough and the water is not too hot or cold before putting your baby in the tub. Baby’s skin burns easily.
  4. Use a washcloth to gently wipe baby’s face and ears. No soap is necessary near the eyes.
  5. Use only a mild baby shampoo and soap.
  6. Scrub your baby’s scalp with a soft brush and rinse well to avoid cradle cap.
  7. Lotions are usually not necessary. Do not use talcum powder on your baby.

Bath time

Babies have sensitive skin that dries out easily. While some parents like to give the baby a bath every day, most babies, especially younger infants, only need one every few days. In between baths, parents should take care to keep baby’s face and bottom very clean. Babies can have tub baths only after the exposed umbilical cord has fallen off, which can take up to a month after birth. (Umbilical cord care) Before then, a sponge bath will do.

When to bathe?

Ideally, a bath should be given in the morning or at the end of the day before a feeding so afterward the baby can then eat and fall asleep. However, a very hungry baby will be miserable in the tub. If you feed your baby first, wait 15 minutes or so before bathing to avoid spit up. Not all babies like a bath at first. Your relaxed attitude will help a great deal in helping baby enjoy a bath. Babies usually find baths tiring and so may you at first!

How Stress Affects Your Skin

Signs of Stress on Skin

Signs of Stress on Your Skin

It’s not a myth — stress will wreak havoc on your skin. At blame: a bittersweet, little hormone called cortisol. Small increases of cortisol in the body can be a good thing — giving us a quick burst of energy during a ‘fight or flight’ response — but, like cookies or deadlines, too much can quickly turn bad.

When we’re stressed, cortisol levels tend to remain high for an extended period of time — days, weeks, months — which ultimately causes inflammation in the skin, says Dr. Amy Wechsler, M.D., New York dermatologist and psychiatrist and author of “The Mind-Beauty Connection: 9 Days to Less Stress, Gorgeous Skin, and a Whole New You.” In turn, that inflammation can cause breakouts, dryness, sensitive skin — even wrinkles, says Wechsler.

“If someone is stressed out, they may have a stomach ache or an ulcer and it’s terrible for the individual, but they don’t have to deal with how the world is seeing it. If you’re breaking out, or if your skin is dry and irritated and red and puffy, then you have to deal with how it looks to you and how other people are perceiving you,” says Wechsler. “That adds to the stress.”

The good news is these changes in your skin don’t have to be permanent — you can easily address them. But you also have to reduce the stress, says Wechsler. “It’s hard to treat the skin effectively if the stress is still going on at such a high level.”

Stress

Here are five ways to help reduce the signs of stress on your skin:

1. Stick to your skin care routine — and use the right products for your problems
No matter how late you’re at the office, don’t skip out on washing and moisturizing your face before bed, says Wechsler. Using the right products can make a difference in your skin if it’s acting up. Here’s some guidance:

If you’re breaking out: “Inflammation in a sebaceous gland causes more sebum and oil to be produced so that will clog more follicles and cause more pimples,” says Wechsler. Start by dabbing on a spot treatment that contains two-percent salicylic acid and consider switching to a cleanser with benzoyl peroxide (you can find both in the skincare aisle of the drugstore). Benzoyl peroxide, which is antibacterial and anti-inflammatory, can be more drying and more irritating than salicylic acid, so Wechsler recommends using a face wash that contains five percent or less (for the body, a wash with up to ten percent is okay).

Remember: more is not better here. Ease these products into your routine by using them once a day — adding too many acne-fighting ingredients at once can over-dry skin causing it to become even more inflamed and more broken out.

If your skin is dry or itchy: When you’re stressed, the skin’s natural barrier that seals in moisture becomes weakened, so water evaporates more quickly and leaves skin drier, says Wechsler. If you’re not moisturizing, start doing so once a day after you wash your face; if you’re moisturizing once a day, bump it up to twice. Wecshler suggests creams and lotions that contain a humectant like glycerin or hyaluronic acid, which attract water and hold it in the skin. If you’re dry and acne-prone, look for a lotion marked oil-free or non-comedogenic. The skin on the body can handle richer ingredients like shea butter.

If your skin is sensitive: Nonstop stress can also make skin sensitive. To calm irritated skin, switch to a fragrance-free, hypoallergenic cleanser and moisturizer, says Wechsler. Be sure to read the ingredient lists on both and if fragrance is listed at all — even if it’s the very last item on the list — it can be a problem for some people, says Wechsler. The sorbic acid in retinoid creams can also be irritating, so avoid using these until your skin is back to normal, too.

If you’re seeing lines and wrinkles: “Dry skin is wrinkley,” says Wechsler. So begin by following the advice above for dryness. Using a cream or lotion with a topical antioxidant like green tea can also help prevent wrinkles by reducing oxidative stress to the skin.

For all of the above: “Once you figure out what works, keep these products on hand,” says Wechsler. That way, if it happens again, you know you’ll have something to remedy the problem.

2. Wear sunscreen
“The sun causes oxidative stress to the surface of the skin, which actually promotes inflammation, making you break out more, have more wrinkles and making your skin drier,” says Wechsler. Look for sunscreens that have broad-spectrum protection (they guard against UVA and UVB rays), contain at least nine percent zinc oxide or titanium dioxide and have an SPF of 30 or higher.

3. Limit carbs and sugar
While that’s exactly what a lot of people reach for when they’re stressed, try to fight it. Research shows that if you’re eating mostly carbs and sugar, your cortisol levels are higher, says Wechsler. A balanced diet of lean proteins, vegetables, and fruits can help give your body nutrients it needs to tame inflammation.

4. Practice good sleep habits
Stress and lack of sleep tend to go hand in hand: When sleep is scarce, your cortisol levels don’t drop as much as they’re supposed to at night, says Wechsler. Just like you practice skin hygiene before bed — washing and moisturizing your face — you have to prepare your brain to go to bed to encourage quality rest. That means: avoiding caffeine after 5 p.m.; eating dinner two to three hours before bed (digesting a heavy meal can keep you awake); dimming the lights and turning off your Blackberry, computer and television an hour before bed (light and stimulating TV signals your brain to stay alert). Instead, thirty minutes before you tuck-in, drink something soothing like chamomile tea or warm milk, take a warm bath or read a book. And, “try to get eight hours,” says Wechsler.

5. Make an appointment with yourself — then a friend
Schedule a manicure or a massage or a pedicure. “It’s not frivolous and it’s not indulgent,” says Wechsler. “It’s actually good for you — the act of spending a little time and energy on yourself.” Meeting a friend for coffee or to visit (or vent) is also worth your time. “Studies show that women especially, if they hang out with a friend in person, it actually lowers your cortisol levels,” says Wechsler.
