Quick Natural Weight Loss,  Lessons from the Caveman

cavemanBack in the day, I mean way back! Cavemen knew how to survive by instinct. They inherently understood what was the best diet for their survival. And, they knew it much better than we do today. Ironically, and more importantly they knew how to survive in the healthiest way possible. Granted they did not have all the modern conveniences to distract them and take them off course or the processed and refined foods we have today.

Below are some pointers that our ancestors taught us and we seemed to have ignored.

  1. Cavemen only ate what they could kill, catch or forage in the wild. Fortunately, we have grocery stores today so we do not have to hunt our prey or gather our other foods in the wild. Although, I know some people who do enjoy hunting and the rewards as a sport, but it is not for most of us.Think about it this way, if the food you are eating is not something a caveman could have hunted, gathered and found himself, then more than likely you should not be putting that food in your mouth. For example, a plate of lean hamburger and vegetables, followed by fresh fruit works nicely. The problems begin when you start adding piece of bread and some pasta Bread and pasta did are foods that were not around in those times and are foods we are much healthier without.
  2. Cavemen only drank what they could find. Water is truly the best kept secret for weight loss and increased health. Sadly, in this day where you can find water in virtually every store, or tap near you, a large percentage of the population is severely dehydrated. These people are suffering many negative side effects such as:
    * Hunger
    * Headaches
    * Constipation
    * Digestive discomfort

All of these can be easily corrected by drinking more water. As a general rule, drink half of your bodyweight in ounces of water each day. For example a person who weighs 200 lbs should drink 100 ounces of water per day.

  3. Cavemen stayed active for a majority of their day. Although this is not quite a nutrition element, I am sure you will agree it is a vital and fundamental part of fat loss and optimized health. Today way to many of us sit in an office chair all day and then go home and sit on the couch for the rest of the night. Activity is our friend, this does not always mean a rigid exercise program. Do simple things like, walk up the stairs to your office, walk the parking lot a few extra times, get up and walk around the office a minimum of once per hour, anything to prevent you from sitting all day long. If present day humans had to maintain the daily activity and schedule of a caveman… well most of us would fall over in exhaustion.

Ironically, we think that the caveman had it so tough. And of course in many ways they did – no cars, no TV and ahhh – no computers! But I believe they had it better than us when it came to diet. If we were to follow the daily activities, in the sense of activity, and food choices of cavemen we would be much healthier.

When it comes to making daily choices here is something to ask yourself. “Is what I am about to eat or drink something I could have found in the wild thousands of years ago?” If the answer is no, don’t eat it and find yourself a food that is more natural.

Here’s to your better health! Happy dieting!

I look forward to your feedback and comments.

Make it a Great Day!

CaloriesCalories, I believe that anyone who has wanted to lose weight has worried about their calorie intake at one time or another. Question is how many calories is the correct number of calories?

According to the 2010 Food & Health Survey: Consumer Attitudes Toward Food Safety, Nutrition & Health: Calorie and Energy Balance: Few Americans (12 percent) can accurately estimate the number of calories they should consume in a day for a person their age, height, weight, and physical activity.  Of those who say they are trying to lose or maintain weight, only 19 percent say they are keeping track of calories.  Additionally, almost half of Americans do not know how many calories they burn in a day (43 percent) or offer inaccurate estimates (35 percent say 1000 calories or less).  When it comes to calories consumed versus calories burned, most Americans (58 percent) do not make an effort to balance the two. Source: International Food Information Council Foundation

Research suggests that the number of calories a person needs and the number they burn depends on age and sex. Adult calorie needs range from 1,400 to 4,000. For example, a woman under 30, who does not exercise needs 2,000 calories a day. A man the same age and activity level needs roughly 2,400 calories.

Losing Weight

Do you know what you daily calorie intake should be?

calorie intake

It was reported that 70 percent of participants are concerned about their weight, only 54 percent are actively trying to lose weight. The question that we all want to know is, can they successfully lose weight when they don’t understand their daily calorie requirement?

It only makes sense that eating the correct amount of calories will maximize your weight loss. Weight loss is a formula involving many different variables – calories, activity, exercise, height, gender, age and so on. This is not an easy equation/ You need to know how many calories your body needs and be careful to stay in the range required for weight loss. I know this is a big shock to everyone, overconsumption can lead to weight gain. With so many variables, it’s no wonder most people are confused about calories and struggle to lose weight.

The chart below lists The Dietary Guidelines for Americans provided by the US Department of Health and Human Services in 2005:

Women

  • Age 19-30: 2,000 calories (sedentary); 2,000-2,200 (moderately active); 2,400 (active)
  • Age 31-50: 1,800 (sedentary); 2,000 (moderately active); 2,200 (active)
  • Age 51 and above: 1,600 (sedentary); 1,800 (moderately active); 2,000-2,200 (active)

Men

  • Age 19-30: 2,400 calories (sedentary); 2,600-2,800 (moderately active); 3,000 (active)
  • Age 31-50: 2,200 (sedentary); 2,400-2,600 (moderately active); 2,800-3,000 (active)
  • Age 51 and above: 2,000 (sedentary); 2,200-2,400 (moderately active); 2,400-2,800 (active)

Therefore, if you are looking to drop a few pounds, you need a slight reduction in the number of calories you consume from the chart above. The numbers illustrated are for weight maintenance not weight loss.

You need to be careful to adjust your calorie intake as your lifestyle. weight or activity levels change.

Keep in mind the real key is to be sure you are consuming the appropriate number of calories for your specific requirements, whether your goal is maintenance, weight loss or gain. You will want to be sure to eat the correct foods for healthy nutrition and spread your calories out over the day by having smaller meals and interspersing snacks. This will help to keep your metabolism going and burning the weight. Remember our bodies will go into starvation mode if you do not eat regularly. This in turns causes your body to store fat not burn it.

Here is a link to a Calorie Calculator from the Mayo Clinic you can use to estimate you calorie needs. As always you should consult your physician to be safe.

Happy dieting!

I look forward to your feedback and comments.

Make it a Great Day!

Eggs and avocadoSurprising Hidden Fat Burning Gems

Everybody knows fruits and vegetables are the typical “healthy foods”. You may be surprised to hear some of the choices for the top fat burning foods that are best for weight loss and good health. I know I was, because I had always heard not so good things about the consumption of these foods. Too high in fat, too much cholesterol, etc… you get the picture. But as I have done more reading and the “experts” have done more research seems that these foods are not so bad for you and actually provide some badly needed nutrients to for you metabolism and body to function better and are good for fat loss.

1. Egg Yolks – What! You say. Complete egg yolks with all of their fat and cholesterol.  Oh and by the way, the thought now is that the cholesterol in egg yolks actually raises your GOOD cholesterol and helps balance proper ratios.

You will find that there are loads of vitamins, minerals, and trace nutrients in egg yolks. This makes them one of the most nutrient dense foods available. The list all of the vital nutrients in egg yolks is too long to list here but just remember, egg yolks should NOT be avoided in favor of egg whites.  Even the protein is more bioavailable when you include the yolks!

So don’t be afraid to eat eggs and start burning stomach fat faster.

2.  Avocados - Loaded with healthy fats, fiber, antioxidants, vitamins and minerals. Avocados are another best fat burning “fatty food”! Avocados also will add a rich creamier taste to your dishes and make them more delicious. A great side benefit is that the healthy fat in avocados will help control hunger and fat burning hormones in your body.

If you have not tried, add a little avocado or guacamole to your morning eggs. Or put a few slices of avocado on salads, sandwiches, and burgers. You will start burning body fat faster.

Avocados would be considered one of the best healthy super foods.

grass fed beef

3.  Grass-fed beef - Grass-fed beef contains much higher levels of healthy omega-3 fatty acids and lower omega-6 fats. Our diet of processed foods contains too much omega-6 today. Another great benefit is that this beef also contains higher levels of vitamins, minerals, and linoleic acid (CLA). Linoleic acid is a healthy fat that helps your body to burn fat.

You may have to go to a butcher or perhaps a natural food store to get grass-fed beef. Your typical grocery store will most likely have grain fed beef. This beef is from cattle that may have been in poor health and because of their diet they have lesser nutrition values. You will also find that the omega-6 to omega-3 fat ratios that are out of line.

Healthy Fats and BodyImplement these 3 tips to help lose weight and eating a smarter, healthier diet. I would be shocked if you do not start to seeing a leaner body and more energy in no time.

1.  Healthy Fats: For each meal you should be sure to include some healthy fats.  We have been indoctrinated to believe fats are a bad thing. But in actuality, some fats are good for you and help your body with appropriate fat burning. and muscle building hormone levels in your body.  When you consume sufficient healthy fats it is beneficial in helping keep your appetite in check.

Some example of health fats, raw nuts, seeds, egg yolks, avocados, extra virgin olive oil – which contains the highest antioxidant level of olive oils, coconut oil, and grass-fed meats.

2. Appetite suppression: About 30 minutes prior to your meals eat a handful of raw nuts such as pecans, walnuts or almonds. This will aid in holding down your appetite and provide the added benefit of adding some protein and fiber to your diet, which your body requires to function at its best. You will find yourself eating healthy fats and you will consume less calories and get more nutrition. Many people do not realize that nuts are very high in nutrient density. Make it a goal to have a high quality protein source with each meal and snack.

Adequate protein with your meals will support your body in controlling blood sugar and insulin levels by assisting in the slow the breakdown of carbohydrates.

3. Watch the types of carbohydrates: It has been demonstrated that, when people start to minimize their grain consumption from refined grains such as cereals, bagels, breads, pasta, and so on, their bodies eliminate body fat much easier.  Natural sugars in whole fruits and berries are good for the body. Also, the fiber in fruits helps your body to process sugar more effectively. You want to be careful of fruit juices. Fruit juices are comprised primarily of  sugar and the most important ingredient, fiber, has been removed in the processing of the juice.

Your best bet is to decrease your intake of refined grains and emphasize carbohydrate intake primarily with whole fruits and vegetables. In many cases just this single step will help people manage their weight more easily.

I look forward to your feedback and comments.

Make it a Great Day!

Balanced DietI will open by saying something everyone already knows – Lifelong weight management is key if you want be healthy and have longevity. To maintain and or lose weight your first priority should be a healthy, well balanced diet.  Exercise is of course important, but your nutritional diet is number “1”.

Recently, I was out with some friends and we stopped at one of the more popular fast food establishments. I am not very big on fast food, but in this case everybody wanted to go. In these instances, you just have to do what you can to find the healthiest possible choice. When you are in this situation, here’s a little tip you can follow always keep away from the soda and all things deep fried. That would be items like french fries, hash browns, hush puppies etc. Another thing to avoid is all breaded foods such as chicken nuggets, chicken patties or breaded fish sandwiches. It is important to remember that all of these foods are fried in trans fats from the industrial hydrogenated vegetable oils. Most if not all fast food restaurants use this type of oil to fry all of these items.

There have been studies indicating that as little as 1 gram of trans fat per day can be detrimental for your body. Bad things like inflammation, clogging and hardening of the arteries, heart disease, various forms of cancer can be attributed to tans fat consumption. And if that is not bad enough you are more than likely packing on flab to the stomach and hip areas. Yes that is correct, as little as 1 gram of trans fat per day – day in and day out!

With that in mind, did you realize that a typical fast-food meal – say a breaded chicken or fish sandwich, with an order of fries can contain as much as 10 grams of trans fat! If you chose to have a cookie or small piece of pie for dessert you’re looking at about 13 grams of trans fat for your meal.

trans-fatMakes you wonder, if 1 gram a day can slowly and unknowingly kill you, what affect is 13 grams having! Oh by the way, this is only one, what about those that are eating 20-30 grams of trans fat per day?

It is imperative that you understand that the only person looking out for your health and best interests is YOU.

So the dilemma, how do you avoid the bad foods and consume a sensibly healthy meal when you’re eating fast food. Drinks, avoid the sodas, they are made with highly processed high fructose corn syrup, inevitably this will end up as superfluous belly fat. Water should be your first choice as it is always the best drink. If you require something with flavor, go for unsweetened iced tea. If you are having breakfast, look to an egg, ham, and cheese on an english muffin, avoid a croissant because they contain a lot of trans fat. Another good choice would be a fruit & nut salad. Lunch or dinner, consider the grilled chicken sandwich, chili, a grilled chicken salad no croutons, more trans fat, perhaps a plain cheeseburger.

What you want to keep in the forefront of your mind when you go to fast food heaven is that the most terrible food items are the sodas and fries, and anything deep fried.

Not sure, but I believe all fast food restaurants list nutrition information for all of their foods, you may have to ask for it. Just keep in mind, as little as one gram of trans could cause internal harm. When you see how many grams of trans fat you’re actually consuming, you might change your mind about finishing the meal.

Wheat ProductsToday everyone wants to know how to lose weight and they realize that trans fats and high fructose corn syrup are not good for you. But I believe you will be shocked when you realize that these two may be packing on the fat.

First is wheat products… many people often mistakenly think that this type of food is healthy. Wheat products include most breads, cereals, bagels, muffins, pasta, crackers, etc.  You would want to include “whole wheat” in this category of fattening food.

An initial point to consider is that a considerable percentage of the population is at some level intolerant to the gluten in wheat and some other grains. Those who suffer from full blown celiac disease (also known as coeliac disease) are the most sensitive to it. People do not appreciate is that the majority of the population was never meant to eat large volumes of wheat and wheat products. Our digestive system has not adapted to large amounts of wheat in our diets.

The human digestive system has developed and evolved over several hundred thousand years. Over this time, the primary diet has consisted of meats, fruits, vegetables, nuts, and seeds – what most refer to as a hunter-gatherer diet. On the other hand wheat has come into the human diet over the past two thousand or so years. What is more important is that the large quantities of wheat have been in the past 80-100 years.

Interestingly, it has been observed that when people eliminate wheat products from their diet for 2-3 weeks, they not only start losing body fat more quickly but many no longer have headaches and digestive issues that they have suffered from for years. In some they also notice a change for the better in their skin.

Fruit JuiceThe 2nd illustration of a food that is one of the worst fattening and really surprises most people is fruit juice.

You say WHAT, how can that be. I have always been told juice is good for you. Well, most fruits are incredibly healthy for you. But what happens when you make fruit juice is that you create a high calorie sugary drink that has lost the most advantageous and important ingredient – fiber!

By drinking the fruit juice your body is left craving more carbohydrates because it is getting the juice but not the satisfaction of fiber needed in our diets. Another important point is that the fiber in the whole fruit helps to slow the blood sugar response in the body when compared to just the juice. As a side note, apple and orange juice are two of the worst examples. Think of the fiber left behind!

The essence to all of this – having too much fruit juice will make you fat. However, if you eat the whole fruit, fiber and all, your diet will be more balanced and rich in high nutrient density. However, you still need to work on the other categories of your nutrition regimen and unprocessed foods.

CelluliteAll women I know want to get rid of cellulite!  Is it possible? Below you will find some helpful tips. (be sure to see the video below)

What is Cellulite?

Cellulite is a topographic skin change that is claimed to occur in most post pubertal females. Descriptive names for cellulite include orange peel syndrome, and cottage cheese skin. It appears as a change of skin topography evident by skin dimpling that occurs mainly in women on the pelvic region, lower limbs, and abdomen and is caused by the herniation of subcutaneous fat within fibrous connective tissue, leading to a padded or orange peel–like appearance.

Cellulite is a description rather than a physical object. The term was first used in the 1920s and began appearing in English language publications in the late 1960s, the earliest reference in Vogue magazine, “Like a swift migrating fish the word cellulite has suddenly crossed the Atlantic.”

Its existence as a real disorder has been questioned, and the prevailing medical opinion is that it is merely the “normal condition of many women and some men”. One cosmetic company has noted its historical place in industrialized societies as an “inappropriate term used by women to describe curves which they judge to be too plump and not very aesthetic”.

Cellulite is thought to occur in 80-90% of the postpubertal females. There appears to be a hormonal component to its presentation. It is rarely seen in males.

cellulite

What causes cellulite?

The causes of cellulite are not well understood, but there are several theories that have been put forth as explanations. Among these are:

  • Hormonal factors – hormones likely play an important role in cellulite development. Many believe estrogen, insulin, noradrenaline, thyroid hormones, and prolactin are part of the cellulite production process.
  • Genetics - certain genes are required for cellulite development. Genes may predispose an individual to particular characteristics associated with cellulite, such as gender, race, slow metabolism, distribution of fat just underneath the skin, and circulatory insufficiency.
  • Diet - people who eat too much fat, carbohydrates, or salt and too little fiber are likely to have greater amounts of cellulite.
  • Lifestyle factors - cellulite may be more prevalent in smokers, those who do not exercise, and those who sit or stand in one position for long periods of time.
  • Clothing - underwear with tight elastic across the buttocks (limiting blood flow) may contribute to the formation of cellulite.

How can cellulite be prevented?

Eating healthy, low fat foods such as fruits, vegetables, and fiber can help one to avoid cellulite. Similarly exercising regularly, maintaining a healthy weight, and reducing stress are recommended to prevent cellulite. In addition wearing thongs, boy shorts, or looser fitting undergarments can prevent cellulite that might form due to tight elastic.

acneNegative Effects Of Acne and Effective Acne Treatment

Speaking mostly from the experience of my brother and sister, no so much myself.  I have see the effect that pimples had during their teenage years and even beyond The zits may have come and gone, but one will never forget the horrible feeling when the pimples started sprouting like crazy. Even if you are not really bothered by the pimples, it is still important to take care of this problem as soon as possible. The emergence of acne not only presents a confidence problem in a person but can also leave visual scars on the face.

Actually, it is astonishing how much damage one red bump on the face can do, let alone an entire group of them. So before they manage to create permanent ones, it’s vital to fix the problem as soon as possible. Here are some of the side effects of acne to a person emotionally.

Problems in Self Confidence

The majority teenagers turn into introverts when faced with acne. Some will attempt to hide their face by growing longer hair. Sadly, the impact on self-confidence can be very destructive because the teenage phase presents an important point in our lives. During these years, insecurity can be very detrimental as self image plays an important role in determining how we view ourselves moving into the future.. Those who suffer from acne frequently spend an inordinate time in front of the mirror worrying about how they look and what people think.

Effects on Social Life

Another serious impact the individuals who have acne experience is a fear rejection or ridicule from other people. Unfortunately, this happens more often than not. In essence, many acne victims shy away from the public, particularly those of the opposite sex. It’s even possible for them to absent themselves from any type of gathering.

Treatment

In view of the fact that acne can be very damaging, in more ways than one, it is important to first correct the issue. There are many products that can get rid of acne.

If you know people having trouble with acne, then try to relate to them. It is important to emphasis that the condition is temporary. Also, if possible give a few helpful tips on acne care and potential dangers if possible. The main thing one should consider are the pimples. Once these are taken care of, then everything else should be rebuilt.

Learning how to eliminate acne, is reasonably simple and does not require a college degree. Hence, all the problems caused by pimples aren’t really necessary life routes.

Ages

Peak acne years are 14–17 in females and 16–19 in males. As many as 40% of females and 35% of males are affected during these years.
Tips
• Keep your hands to yourself …
touching skin encourages the spread of bacteria and excess oils, leading to breakouts.

• Excessive cleansing and scrubbing can make acne worse.

Did You Know?

Peppermint helps to open your pores and allows them to be cleansed from the inside. This means pores appear to be smaller, giving you a more youthful appearance.

Here is a list of some of the most harmful items you can put in your body. These Deadly Fatty Foods have been shown to create health issues and diseases.

  1. Hydrogenated oils, trans fats:  Produced by chemically altering the oils. In the process the oils are subjected to ultra high pressure and temperature. Then industrial solvents such as hexane for extraction are added, with a metal catalyst to promote the artificial hydrogenation. Then, bleaching and deodorizing agents are added to the mix to finish the process. It is really unclear to me how the FDA allows this to pass as food. Logically these oils, with all of the ingredients and process they go through cannot be good for the body. Hydrogenated oils have been linked to obesity, heart disease, diabetes, cancer, and other problems. Studies have shown that even small are dangerous for us. Be sure to read the ingredients of everything you buy. If you see partially hydrogenated oils of any kind, margarine, or shortening, protect yourself and do not purchase the item – get a healthier alternative.
    .
  2. Refined oils:  Most oils in your supermarket are refined, you will find this true of even the oils touted as healthy oils such as canola oils. As with hydrogenated oils, many refined oils still undergo similar high temperature, high pressure, solvent extraction, bleaching, and deodorizing processes. Be aware of oils labeled vegetable oil, soybean oil, corn oil, cottonseed oil, safflower oil, and even many canola oils. They may have been through these processesandtherefore will be damaged. This refining process alters the natural structure of the fats, eliminates natural antioxidants, creates free radicals, and produces a product that is unhealthy for our bodies. You will note that the extreme increase in heart disease in the middle of the 20th century occurred about the same time as the rapid increase in the use of hydrogenated and refined oils inthe food supply. Interesting coincidence! You should be on the look out for the labels that say “virgin”, “cold pressed” or “cold expeller pressed”..
  3. All deep fried foods: This one hurts, as it includes tortilla chips, potato chips, French fries, donuts, fried chicken, chicken nuggets, and so on.
    .
  4. Homogenized milk fat – In its natural raw state, milk fat is a healthy fat. In a comparison of grass fed vs. grain fed cows, the milk and beef from grass fed cows has shown higher quantities of healthy fats like conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) and omega-3 fatty. Long-established populations all over the world have demonstrated perfect or near perfect health while consuming raw, non-pasteurized, non-homogenized, full fat dairy products as part of their diets.  Food processing destroys the nutrient value by pasteurizing and homogenizing milk fat. This process creates a potentially dangerous situation inside the human body. Today, unless you personally know a farmer, you will find it almost impossible to find raw milk in the US. You can go to  http://www.realmilk.com for additional information on the benefits of raw milk and to find out if it’s available near you. One possible alternative, cultured dairy products like yogurt have beneficial microorganisms added back to them making them better for you.  Given the alternatives, since you probably won’t find raw milk, sticking to skim milk is the best option to avoid the homogenized milk fat. If you use butter for cooking, your best option is grass-fed butter.
    .
If you care about your health and the health of your family and loved ones, be sure to check the ingredients of everything you buy.

Labels do not tell the story, ingredients do! Companies spend vast sums of money on marketing and testing to determine what will attract the consumer and encourage them to purchase their product. Unfortunately, the claims on labels may be true in the most basic meaning but do not tell the whole story. A perfect example of this is a bottle of salad dressing that claims to be made with olive oil. The ingredients may show that although there is olive oil in the salad dressing it is an irrelevant amount compared to the more prevalent oils, which are more than likely, the “unhealthy oils”.

I hope this series has shed some light on the truth about dietary fats and helped you to better understand their importance in a healthy diet. .
.

A fully comprehensive analysis on dietary protein, carbohydrates, and fat, and how to compile all of this information into a diet that promotes a lean healthy body with a low body fat percentage is provided in the book “The Truth About Six Pack Abs”. Give it a try and you won’t be disappointed! .
